Lone Star Model A Ford Club Shines at Sun City Car Show - May 7, 2005

On Saturday, May 7, 2005, the 5th Annual Sun City Texas "Show & Shine" Car Show was held with approximately 75 entrants. The cars entered ranged from Model A Fords to extreme exotics such as a $174,000 Saleen Mustang, gorgeous street rods, restored '50's Jaguars, several '60's XKE Jaguars, a gorgeous 1940 Lincoln Continental convertible, several Corvettes, Edsels, Chevy Impalas, Corvairs, a beautiful 1940 Mercury convertible, Mercedes convertibles, etc. If it was beautifully restored and expensive, it was there.

JethroPeople's Choice voting produced the following results:

  • 3rd Place - Art Simpkin's 1928 Model A Ford Roadster
  • 2nd Place - Don Hennings 1931 Model A Ford Sport Coupe
  • 1st Place - Owner's Name Unknown, 1947 restored Dodge Power Wagon Truck
  • Best of Show - Fred Carlton's 1929 Model A Ford Tudor Sedan "Jethro"

Fred's car, "Jethro", the Grapes of Wrath/Dustbowl Buggy stole the show with all the miscellaneous "junk" tied on top and the "Mules For Sale" and "Baby - Here's Your Rattle" signs. Fred found this car in a dirt-floored garage near downtown Georgetown in 2004 where it had been parked since 1953 (it still had the Texas '53 license plates on it). It had not been driven for 51 years. Rather than paint it and restore it to its original beauty, Fred chose to leave the vehicle "as found" with its unrestored, rusty patina. As noted by the overwhelming vote for "People's Choice" as best of show winner, everyone agreed with his decision.

Fred commented, "It was a real pleasure to have the overwhelming number of ballots cast for our cars which proves that the Model A Ford is still everyone's favorite. As you can see from the four winners, three are Model A's and there were lots of other gorgeous and much more expensive cars on display. I'm thrilled that a $1,500 rusty car won over a $174,000 James Bond-mobile." The Model A Ford is still "America's Sweetheart."
