Gillum Cemetery

Abslom Barton Gillum (1836-1923) and his wife, Hannah Emmaline, arrived in Texas from Alabama in 1872. In 1880, Gillum bought land at the present site of the cemetery. A.B. Gillum served in the Civil War, was postmaster of Oakalla, was recognized as a master mason, and owned a cotton gin. The first person buried in the cemetery is four-year-old William Peter Gillum (1878-1880) Other burials in clude Woodmen of the World and veterans from the Civil War to the present.

We take the shortest route through the country.

There is low water.

Let's just hot wire around the fuse block.

Clear Creek Baptist Church

According to oral tradition, this congregation was organized in 1872 as the Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church by six families who resided in this area of east Lampasas County. The church petitioned for membership in the Leon River Baptist Association in 1876 and sent delegates to the associational meeting the following year. The Rev. Ambrose Elledge (d. 1884) served as first pastor, and is buried in the nearby cemetery. Over the years a brush arbor and later an open air tabernacle were used for revivals. Baptisms were held in the Lampasas River until 1975. The oldest legible tombstone in the nearby church cemetery is dated 1872.
