We searched for the sites in the book as we traveled.
We didn't discover all that we looked for, and there was not enough time to see everything.

Tucumcari was formerly called Six-Shooter Siding.
Many have left on the 3:10 to Yuma.

It was a gas station in the 1940's, but lost its pumps when the road was widened.

Blue Swallow Motel used surplus WWII cabins

But inside one of the garages was a great find.

Texaco Station

Too bad they didn't have a real 1959 Cadillac

Fire Chief gasoline is a motor fuel that meets the octane requirements for fire engines.
It was introduced in 1932.

Sky Chief gasoline is premium grade fuel developed from the ground up as a high-octane
gasoline rather than just an ethylized regular product. Introduced in 1938.

On one of the early Route 66 alignments, you can still find modern
conveniences at the community of Endee. No lines!!

Built in about 1928 in Adrian, Texas. Their slogan is "When You're Here, You're Halfway There."

A must-stop near Amarillo is the Cadillac Ranch which was commissioned by Stanley Marsh 3.
Rumor has it that the angle is the same as used on the sides of the Great Pyramids of Egypt (51.84 degrees).

Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
In 1874, the last Comanche, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Kiowa raiding party was surprised in
their camp by the 4th US Cavalry. This battle ended the Indian raids from Oklahoma into Texas.

The plaque says "Built by Bradley Kiser 1930-then in downtown Alanreed."

Phillips 66 Service Station, McLean, Texas.

Built in the 1920s as the first Phillips 66 Station in Texas.
It was in business for more than 50 years.

The U Drop Inn--Over a million dollar restoration in Shamrock, Texas.
You might notice a similarity to Radiator Springs in "Cars." It dates from 1936.

The plaque on the Tower Building, its name after the "Inn" closed.

Beckham County courthouse in Sayer, Oklahoma was built in 1911.
It appears in "The Grapes of Wrath."

One of the Elk City, Oklahoma, train stations now serving great food.
The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad was established in Dallas in 1865.
The Katy was the first railroad to enter Texas from the north through Denison, Texas.

Clinton, Oklahoma, has a nice museum.

The first Oklahoma Highway Patrol car is on display in the lobby.

After the introduction of the Highway Patrol, Oklahoma, traffic deaths dropped by one-third.
Ford didn't have hydralic brakes until 1939.

You could order one of these pre-built Valentine dinners with grill and counter.

Lucille Hamons and her husband operated this gas station and tourist court after 1941.

Lucille earned the nickname of Mother of the Mother Road.

Fort Reno was established in 1874 to provide security in Cheyenne & Arapaho lands and at times was home to the
buffalo soldiers. It housed German prisoners during World War II and is now used for agricultural research.

A nice old fire engine in the Canadian County Historical Museum in El Reno, Oklahoma.

Model T in the red barn. This museum was very interesting, and the docent was excellent.

The Braum Family Farm is located in Tuttle, Oklahoma.

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is a must-stop in Oklahoma City.
Start at the back where the Cowboy stuff is.

The 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City is a highly-regarded military museum
and has something for everyone. The collection of Willie and Joe cartoons is impressive.

after the land run of 1891. The locals call it the Pecan Capital of the World.

The Rock Cafe is in Stroud and was built with stones unearthed during the construction of Route 66.

Dawn Welch, the owner, was an inspiration for Sally Carrera, the Porsche 911.

Dawn is the person in the blue blouse. The cafe is known for its reuben sandwich and Jagerschnitzel.

is the largest free-standing statue in the world.

Gilcrease Museum

Azaleas are really in bloom. The complex contains one of the world's most
comprehensive collections of Native American & Western art.

This Meadow Gold sign was built in the 1930s and is one-of-a-kind.

The Blue Dome Service Station was built in 1924 and was originally a Gulf station.
It was the first station in Oklahoma to have hot water, pressurized air, a car wash, and 24-hour service.

It's a restored historic Route 66 classic roadside attraction.

First Presbyterian Church in Claremore, Okla.

Belvidere Mansion is a magnificent three-story Victorian mansion built in 1907.

Will Rogers Memorial Museum
contains an extensive collection of art & artifacts pertaining to the life of Will Rogers

This dioarama shows Will Rogers sitting on his Cadillac typing one of his newspaper articles
while on a movie set. He was in about 50 silent movies and about 20 talkies.

The Hogue House in Chelsea, OK, was an original Sears Roebuck precut house purchased in 1916.
It is still owned by descendants of the original purchaser.

This printing press was used to publish "The Craig County Weekly Gazette"
in Bluejacket during the 1890's. It's located in the Eastern Trails Museum in Vinita, OK.

Fordson was a brand name used on a range of mass-produced general-purpose tractors
manufactured by Henry Ford & Son Inc from 1917 to 1920.

Diamond D-X station in Afton, Oklahoma

The station dates to the 1930s and has memorabilia along with a collection of antique autos.

A replica of a sign originally constructed in the 1900's that spanned Central and C Street adjacent to the railroad station. For many years this sign welcomed visitors to downtown Miami. The original sign was removed during the 1930's.
Today's replica welcomes visitors to a revitalized downtown Miami.

The Coleman Theatre in Miami, OK, was originally a vaudeville theater & movie palace.
The architecture is Spanish Mission Revival style. Opening night was in April of 1929.

Marathon Oil station in Miami, Oklahoma is thought to be the oldest of its kind.

This station opened in 1929. In 1930, the Ohio Oil Company purchased the Transcontinental Oil Company,
acquiring the Marathon product name, the Pheidippides Greek runner trademark,
and the "Best in the long run" slogan.

McAlester, OK, began with J. J's trading post. He came there because of coal in the Chickasaw Nation.

We stopped at this clean-looking "service" station in McAlester, OK.

The price for Ethyl was really good. Ethyl had tetraethyl lead to reduce knocking.
To eliminate the resulting lead deposits on the valves,
ethylene dibromide was added in 1923.

No one inside, but they do have my favorite oil.
Texaco bought the Indian Oil Company in 1931 which included the rights to Havoline.

There was no chamois or water in the wash tub. As a kid, I put many through the wringer.
No one ever came out to service my car; so we left.
